THE LAST PATROL - by Wanda & Bob Duncan
The Time Travellers, landing in the last battle of the War of 1812,
are in danger of being executed as British spies.
Landing in the middle of the lost battle of the War of 1812, Tony and Duog are
captured by a patrol and brought before Colonel Southall, who orders them to
be tried as spies. The harried Colonel is engaged in a battle at New Orleans
against Andrew Jackson’s forces, for a treaty that had been signed at Ghent
two weeks before, and is desperately in need of information as to whether
Jackson is concentrating his strength to the East or to the West. Meanwhile,
in the Time Tunnel, the crew has brought in expert General Southall descendant
of the Colonel to help pinpoint the exact time and placement of Tony and
Doug. In the forest, the Colonel is finding Doug and Tony guilty but, in a
last ditch attempt to get information concerning Jackson’s forces, he forces
Tony to lead patrol-leader Hotchkiss to the American lines, saying if he comes
back with the needed information his and Doug's life will be spared. Privately
though he tells Hotchkiss to kill him anyway. Back at the Time Tunnel, the
General, who has made a career of studying his descendsnt’s fatal blunder at
this battle, asks to be transported to the scene. Doug now is facing the
firing squad when the OK comes from Washington allowing General Southall to
go through the Time Tunnel. Materializing at the execution scene, the General
does save Doug, then concentrates his efforts on convinaing his ancestor that
he has knowledge of how this battle is going to turn out. He knows the Colonel
will attack to the East, yet the signal will tell him to attack to the West.
Doug, Tony, who escaped from Hotchkiss, and the Lieutenant who’s to do the
signalling, manage to alter the signal so Southall is told to attack West. The
General, realizincg his ancestor wasn't fooling him, dies happily in the
disasterous battle, while Tony and Doug are whirled back into the vortex of
time.
